Gathering Wood, Gathering Warmth

As the last traces of autumn fade across Boorowa, preparations for winter begin in earnest. Around here, colder days are not something that arrives overnight — they are something we slowly prepare for, together.

Through family, community, and the rituals that bring us together

There is a particular rhythm to life in regional Australia as the seasons shift.

The golden paddocks begin to pale. The mornings arrive with a sharper edge. The evenings invite earlier sunsets and thicker jumpers. In Boorowa, winter can be beautiful, but it can also be bitterly cold. Preparing for it is simply part of life on the land.

Over recent weekends, much of that preparation has involved gathering and cutting firewood. Practical work, certainly, but also the kind of work that naturally brings people together. There is something grounding about stacking timber, hearing the crack of splitting wood, and knowing that each piece will help keep the house warm through the months ahead.

And then comes the reward. The first bonfires of the season!

As the temperature dropped, we gathered outside with the children, our wonderful nanny Kerry, and our much-loved neighbour and honorary farm grandfather, Poppy Mick. Stories were shared, marshmallows found their way into the flames, and the simple pleasure of being together became the centre of the evening.

Winter is arriving in Boorowa, and with it comes a different kind of beauty.
