Beyond the Canvas: Stories of Connection and Resilience
Over the past months, the studio has extended beyond its walls — becoming a space of connection, reflection, and quiet transformation through Art as Therapy workshops with the Boorowa veteran community. At its core, this work begins with the simple act of showing up.
There is something deeply meaningful about creating in a shared space. Not for outcome, but for presence. Not for perfection, but for expression.
Holding Space: Art as Therapy with the Boorowa Community
From September 2025 through to March 2026, I had the privilege of leading a series of Art as Therapy workshops at Chesterton Gallery, working alongside local veterans and their families. These sessions formed part of the Creative Resilience: Art for Wellbeing program, supported by the Veterans Support Fund on behalf of RSL NSW (Boorowa Sub-Branch).
What unfolded across those months was never just about making art. It was about creating a space where people could slow down, explore colour and movement, and reconnect with curiosity. Using fluid mediums, texture, and intuitive mark-making, participants were invited to step away from expectation and into a more instinctive way of working. No pressure. No judgement. Just the quiet unfolding of process.
Over time, the room filled with more than materials. It filled with conversation, shared stories, laughter, and those subtle but powerful moments of surprise — when someone begins to see what they are capable of creating. Each work that emerged from these sessions holds something personal. Not only in its form, but in the experience behind it. They are reflections of resilience, courage, and connection — shaped by memory, presence, and the surrounding Hilltops landscape.
If you thought you may have missed the opportunity to acquire one of these works, there is still time. A selection of pieces will be available during the upcoming Mother’s Day Mingle here in Boorowa
A special mention to Boorowa’s craftsman Darrell Armour, who handcrafted most of the frames from locally reclaimed hardwood. Each one brings a quiet strength and sense of place to the works.
It has been a privilege to hold space for this work and to witness creativity in its most human form. Not as performance, but as a way of reconnecting — to self, to others, and to something often left unspoken.
