Silence of the land

Silence of the Land

This body of work considers the quiet force of landscape — not as scenery, but as something lived, endured, and held within the body.

Silence of the Land emerges from an ongoing engagement with regional and industrial Australia, where vastness and isolation coexist with histories that are often unspoken. These environments carry a particular psychological weight — one shaped by labour, gender, and the subtle dynamics of power that unfold over time.

The works do not seek to describe place directly. Instead, they evoke its residue.

Through layered surfaces, restrained palettes, and shifting gestures, the paintings hold a tension between presence and absence. Forms appear and dissolve. Marks are both asserted and withheld. What is visible is only partial — an indication of something more complex beneath.

At its core, the series explores silence — not as emptiness, but as a condition.

A space where experience is absorbed rather than expressed.

Where endurance becomes embedded within both land and body.

This silence is not passive. It carries memory, pressure, and persistence.

Within this, the works also reflect on the experiences of those who move through these landscapes — particularly women navigating environments where visibility is uneven, and where strength is often required without acknowledgment.

Rather than offering resolution, Silence of the Land invites a slower engagement. The paintings unfold over time, revealing subtle shifts in tone, texture, and emotional register.

They are not fixed images of place, but living surfaces — holding what is seen, and what remains just beyond articulation.

Works from this series are held in private collections and are available via enquiry.
